Carilion Health System Eliminates Rogue WLAN Laptops & APs with AirDefense

24x7 Stateful Monitoring Assists Hospital IT Staff to Enforce WLAN Policies
& Maximize Network Performance for Authorized Wireless LANs

Atlanta, GA- January 8, 2004 - AirDefense Inc., the leader of 24x7 monitoring of wireless LANs, today announced that Carilion Health System is deploying AirDefense solutions to identify and eliminate all rogue wireless LANs, enforce security and management policies and monitor the health of its wireless LANs.

With dynamic healthcare environments that include full service hospitals, acute care centers and satellite offices across western Virginia, Carilion Health System relies on wireless LANs for point-of-care applications. However, the large healthcare organization still faces the threat of unauthorized, rogue wireless LANs.

"On-site consultants, subcontractors and vendors are eager to utilize wireless LANs in our airspace and sometimes arrive on site and do not understand their laptops are in ad- hoc mode thus violating our policies," said Greg Walton, Senior VP and CIO at Carilion Health System. "For Carilion, rogue wireless LANs are a serious matter. AirDefense provides the peace of mind from knowing that we can identify and eliminate all unsanctioned wireless laptops, APs, ad hoc networks and application-specific wireless devices as they enter our airspace."

The AirDefense WLAN security and monitoring system is based on the patent-pending technology that incorporates distributed sensors and an appliance. The remote sensors monitor all wireless LAN activities 24x7 and communicate with the appliance, which correlates and analyzes the data to provide scalable, centralized management of real-time rogue detection, policy enforcement, intrusion protection and health monitoring of the wireless LAN.

"Identifying access point beacons across the air is just the first step for rogue detection and WLAN monitoring," said Bill Sims, director of healthcare solutions for AirDefense. "To fully understand security risks and network performance issues, healthcare organizations and other security-conscious enterprises rely upon advanced wireless LAN monitoring that includes stateful analysis and advanced correlation."
